Rare Pokémon card sells for nearly $55,000
We’ve all collected something in our childhoods, baseball cards, dolls, whatever, and wonder if those antiques are worth a lot of money.
For one person, a rare Pokémon card was sold at auction for a world record $54,970. The card was a Pikachu Illustrator Card presented to winners of the CoroCoro Comic Illustration Contest in 1998.
“Only 20-39 copies of this card were released, 10 of which are graded in top condition, and it is unknown how many still remain with the public,” said Barry Sandoval, director of operations for comics at Heritage Auctions.
The card was designed by Atsuko Nishida, one of the chief Pokémon graphic illustrators, and is considered the most valuable and iconic Pokémon card among collectors. The card depicts Pikachu holding drawing utensils.
Hertiage Auctions said the popularity of the Pokemon Go mobile game app has increased the value of Pokemon cards. They said a Charizard card sold in 2014 for $3,350 recently sold again for $11,999.
